Printed Matter’s LAABF is Back!

After a brief hiatus, Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair (LAABF), is back and better than ever, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles. It’s a wonder that a space as big as the Geffen can fill up at all, let alone with people enthusiastic about art books, but each year the behemoth of a fair actually approaches capacity.

Here’s a list of of our favorite titles and things launching this weekend that might be responsible for some of the hype.

CLASSIC PARIS: Rest by Charlotte Gainsbourg

The coolest publishing house and shop in Paris, Classic is back at the fair this year with the beautiful new book by the actress and musician (and of course child of icons Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin). “Rest” is Gainsbourg’s first publication and features a compilation of photographs, lyrics, handwritten notes and drawings, all of which she created while making her latest album.

LIVER IDEAS: Heads Magazine #9

Virginia-based artist and publisher Jason S. Wright aka Liver Ideas puts out a whopping zine each year featuring work by a giant roster of artists from all over the world, who each get their own section of the publication. It’s sold out everywhere, but they’ve got a few issues with them at the fair this weekend. Featured artists include: Jo Rosenthal, Brain Dead, B. Thom Stevenson, CNY NYC (Peter Sutherland), The Good Company and Stugazi.

COLOURED PUBLISHING: Love Letters, Winding Roots II and La Virgin de Guadalupe

New books launching this weekend from the outfit run by artists Devin Troys Strother and Yuri Ogita include “Love Letters,” a book of photographs containing which focus on typefonts, “Winding Roots II,” a collection of interviews with Asian people about their hair and “La Virgin de Guadalupe,” a photo zine of La Virgen murals found in Boyle Heights.

COMMUNE PRESS TOKYO: GIGAMAKU and Fever Glows in the Dark

In addition to all of the incredible things they’ve brought over from Tokyo, Commune is releasing artist Antwan Horfee‘s book “GIGAMAKU” with a matching t-shirt. Also, never one to be at a fair without something new from B. Thom Stevenson, they’re releasing a limited-run “Fever Glows in the Dark” tote-bag by the artist.

SILENT SOUND: Golden Ghosts by Jim Mangan

Run by artist Coley Brown, Silent Sound is excited to release Jim Mangan‘s book of photos taken during the 2016 Death Valley Superbloom. Plus dont miss all the new gear from SS.
