Horror Reads That Will Scare You Silly

This Halloween season, you might plan to attend a midnight showing of The Shining or maybe you curl up at home to stress eat a pile of candy while watching Freddy Krueger terrorize Elm Street. We’ve put together a list of novels that were the inspiration for some of the most terrifying flicks. Believe us, the book is scarier than the movie (sleep with the light on).

The Sinner by Petra Hammesfar

You’ve seen the billboards around town with a wet, gaunt Jessica Biel, announcing her return to TV in The Sinner. Before it was a series on USA, it was a psychological thriller of a novel by Petra Hammesfar. The Sinner follows a murder case in which Cora Bender, the protagonist, inexplicably stabs a complete stranger to death in broad daylight. So many questions.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

Many a scary story involves a remote cabin in the woods, but the titular cabin of Ruth Ware’s novel is one on a ship at sea. A travel journalist sets out on a luxury cruise in the North Sea, but an intense, nightmarish journey ensues. Lo Blacklock, the journalist, witnesses a woman being thrown overboard amidst a storm, yet afterwards every passenger is accounted for.

A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena

Shari Lapena’s latest suspense novel tells the story of a suspicious accident that comes between a husband and wife. Tom comes home from a day at work to his wife, Karen, but she is nowhere to be found and she appears to have left in a hurry. Karen is found after a car wreck in the worst part of town and claims to not remember a thing. What is the truth?

The Snowman by Jo Nesbø

Before he was played by Michael Fassbender on the silver screen, Harry Hole was the main character in a series of crime novels by Norwegian author, Jo Nesbø. The Snowman is the seventh novel in the series and follows the investigation of “The Snowman Killer.” As he toys with the police, the sociopathic serial killer uses snowmen as his calling card.
