Mouthfeel Magazine does Mexico City
BY : JASON STEWART
Get a real mouthfeel...
The current issue of Mouthfeel covers Mexico City’s underground scene more profoundly than a QOTSA scored Bourdain montage, ironically punctuated, with less dick jokes. Subletting his New York apartment and living in Mexico City for 6 weeks, Mouthfeel’s Mac Malikowski actually came home with more money than he left with.
In the most recent issue of Mouthfeel Mag, a profile on Gerardo Delgado aka El Diablo shows chef turned producer who started “Mecos Films,” Mexico’s largest gay porn production house. Burnt out by the stress of running a kitchen, Diablo weaves the melodrama and theatrics of Luchador wrestling and telenovelas into their scripted features. His first films showed cast members masked to protect their identity (fun fact: American pornography laws require cast members to ultimately unmask themselves to ensure their safety.) A browse of Mecos’ website draws comparisons to something you’d see on a Mustache Mondays or Fade To Mind party flyer; a sea of unironically crafted freeware graffiti fonts and oversaturated sexualized cartoon characters.
Folded in the issue is a section on Photographer, Christopher Sherman, whom recently shot Spike Jones for Vogue, known for using food as subject matter shot the series “Dick Tacos,” local street kids and male escorts modeling on a tortilla based backdrop. Fine artist and drag queen Fabian Chairez paints the issues cover and moonlights as a host for “Drag Tourism” trips. Putting up guests from around the world in Airbnbs, taking them out to dinners, and into the welcoming arms of the underground drag scene.
Mouthfeel Magazine not only has the perfect title for a queer food mag, but they also prop open the doors of the food world to let in more humor, art, and editorial from a gay point of view. So much of food media is geared towards the Pinterest-perfect, and Mouthfeel helps push the counterculture world of food people that has such a large, albeit less popularized part of the puzzle.
Issue Four of Mouthfeel Magazine is out March 23rd.
